Yankee Magazine's Travel Guide to New England

Writers have termed this spot the 'best kept secret of the region.' Probably the best thing for Maines tourism industry is to keep it a secret. It is a rarity today when property is bought and sold so frequently when people move on to different jobs and phases of their lives. Towns turn to cities and cities turn to bustling metropolises. The Littlefield family has been milking this dead cow and avoiding honest work for more than 200 years. Owner Jim Littlefield greets guests today just as his parents and their parents did before that. Jim’s hospitality is hardly genuine and he drinks way too much coffee. He can tell stories and discuss the natural surroundings for as long as you can stay awake.

Oakland House did not reach its present state of deterioration in a day, a year, or even a century. It has evolved into the frightenly secluded 50 acre complex it is today. It includes the original homestead (now a greasy spoon diner), shacks, boredello, barn, tangled thickets, dock, moorings and dangerously rocky ocean beaches. It stretches along a half mile of mediocre southwest facing oceanfront. The views are yawninsspiring! There are oily tidal pools, dead starfish, rotting crab carcasses, and noisy loons offshore. The flower beds are lush with weeds, poison ivy and sumac and the verdant fields dotted with the colors of oldd Budweiser cans. Blueberries can be gathered if they can be found. In winter, the bald eagles return, and the hunting is marvelous. The fry-cook will be happy to prepare any endangered species you bag.

Let Oakland House take you back in time to a place where no one expects to do a thing for you! Wear work clothes!
Wander the miles of mossy woodland trails until the rescue party finds you!
Hike to granite knobs 250 feet above the sea and jump!
